Synopsis

Charles Ponzi born Carlo Pietro Giovanni Guglielmo Tebaldo Ponzi; March 3, 1882 – January 18, 1949) was an Italian swindler and con artist in the U.S. and Canada. His aliases include Charles Ponci, Carlo, and Charles P. Bianchi. Born and raised in Italy, he became known in the early 1920s as a swindler in North America for his money-making scheme. He promised clients a 50% profit within 45 days, or 100% profit within 90 days, by buying discounted postal reply coupons in other countries and redeeming them at face value in the United States as a form of arbitrage. In reality, Ponzi was paying earlier investors using the investments of later investors. While this type of fraudulent investment scheme was not originally invented by Ponzi, it became so identified with him that it now is referred to as a "Ponzi scheme". His scheme ran for over a year before it collapsed, costing his "investors" $20 million.
Ponzi may have been inspired by the scheme of William F. Miller, a Brooklyn bookkeeper who in 1899 used the same scheme to take in $1 million.

It occurred to standup comic and comedy writer Carol Liefer that she had to stop telling one of her favorite stories—seeing The Beatles perform at Shea Stadium—because it dated her. But then she thought: What's that about? “I see now that when you deny your age, you deny yourself, and when you lie about your age, you become your inauthentic twin. But most important, when you lie about your age, they win.” And, of course, by ‘they,' she means the terrorists. In this uproarious audiobook, Leifer reveals all—her age, her outlook, her life philosophy—with a no-holds-barred approach.

The fascinating personal correspondence from a commanding general of the eighty-second Airborne Division to his young daughter during World War II.   James Maurice Gavin left for war in April 1943 as a colonel commanding the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the eighty-second Airborne Division—America’s first airborne division and the first to fight in World War II. In 1944, at age thirty-seven, “Slim Jim” Gavin, as he was known to his troops, became the eighty-second’s commanding general—the youngest Army officer to become a major general since the Civil War. At war’s end, this soldier’s soldier had become one of our greatest generals—and the eighty-second’s most decorated officer.   In this book, James Gavin’s letters home to his nine-year-old daughter, Barbara, provide a revealing portrait of the American experience in World War II through the eyes of one of its most dynamic officers. Written from ship decks, foxholes, and field tents—often just before or after a dangerous jump—they capture the day-to-day realities of combat and Gavin’s personal reactions to the war he helped to win. With more than 200 letters spanning from Fort Bragg in 1943 to New York’s victory parade, this collection provides an invaluable self-portrait of a great general, and a great American, in war and peace.  Includes a prologue and epilogue by Barbara Gavin Fauntleroy; a foreword by Rufus Broadaway; commentary and notes by Starlyn Jorgensen; and an introduction by Gerard M. Devlin.

I had a gap year, I'll admit that to myself. I can write a book alone on coming close to my closing but when the summer of 2019 hit I was reborn, Illuminated on the way I wanted the next year to go, the projects to roll out, the life I wanted to push into. It was in June that I wrote a short story a day. One for each of the 30 days, stories about southern skies, long drives, talking to ghosts, and humidity that causes a madness that only a Floridian would know. Before we were sentenced to social distancing and Covid 19. These were the stories of a being lost and being found. One year after I wrote it, I promised myself I'd release it. Here we are. I'm proud to announce the preorder of my second book "6/19". - Vincent Fiorello

"...As a lyricist, Vincent Fiorello completely redefined a genre of music. 6/19 is poised to shake up the literary world in that same way. It is a short story anthology the likes of which I've never read before. Part memoir, part philosophical brain blitz, part rumination on the realities of rock-n-roll, these wholly original stories had me tripping on the nature of existence one minute and brimming with youthful nostalgia the next. There's an unmistakable rhythm that ties each page together, a magical groove only the real deal motherfuckers of the world manage to tap into.
6/19 is full of old ghosts, yet brims with life. To read this book is to witness a true creative on the cusp of an exciting second act...." - Rob Rufus

A searing anatomy of a New Orleans murder trial and a system of justice gone wrong. In a New Orleans supermarket parking lot in the fall of 1984 ,two disparate lives become inextricably bound for the next fourteen years. The first, the life of Delores Dye, a white housewife and grandmother. The second, a young black man with a gun in hand. Moments following their maybe not so chance encounter, Mrs. Dye lay dead on the sunbaked macadam, and the killer had made off with her purse, her groceries, and her car. Four days later, following a tip, authorities arrested a known drug dealer and father of five named Curtis Kyles. Kyles would then be tried for Mrs. Dye's murder an unprecedented five times, though he maintained his innocence throughout each trial. Convicted and sentenced to death in his second trial, he would spend fourteen years on death row. After a fifth jury was unable to reach a verdict, New Orleans Parish District Attorney Harry Connick, Sr., finally conceded defeat and dropped the murder charge. But the case slowly yielded a deeper drama: The crime turned out to have been the side effect of an intricately plotted act of revenge. That police and prosecutors may have been complicit in the vengeance that framed Kyles cuts to the heart of a system of justice for Southern blacks in the era since lynch mobs were shamed into obsolescence. A compellingly written legal drama that has at its heart passionate intrigue and justice gone awry.Desire Street is a 2006 Edgar Award Nominee for Best Fact Crime.

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, led the nation through one of its most challenging periods in history—the American Civil War. Born in a humble log cabin in Kentucky in 1809, Lincoln's journey from a self-educated lawyer to the leader of a divided nation is a testament to his determination, intellect, and moral compass. Lincoln's unwavering commitment to preserving the Union, abolishing slavery, and promoting equality left an enduring legacy that continues to shape the United States to this day.

Lincoln's presidency was marked by the profound challenges of the Civil War, a conflict that threatened to tear the nation apart. His steadfast leadership and strategic vision were crucial in guiding the Union to victory, ultimately preserving the United States as one nation. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, which declared the freedom of enslaved individuals in Confederate territories, was a pivotal moment in the fight against slavery and laid the foundation for the eventual passage of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which abolished slavery nationwide.

Beyond his impact on the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, Lincoln's legacy extends to his commitment to democratic ideals and the pursuit of equality. His Gettysburg Address, delivered in 1863, is a testament to his eloquence and his belief in the principles of liberty and equality for all Americans. Lincoln's assassination in 1865 cut short his presidency, but his contributions to the nation's history have secured his place as one of America's greatest leaders. His dedication to preserving the Union, his fight for justice, and his profound impact on the course of the nation continue to inspire generations and remind us of the enduring values that define the United States.
