Summary

An “engrossing” biography of a brilliant novelist underappreciated in his own time who became a twenty-first-century bestseller, from the New York Times–bestselling author (The New Yorker). When Stoner was published in 1965, the novel sold only a couple of thousand copies before disappearing with hardly a trace. Yet the quietly powerful tale of Midwestern college professor William Stoner, whose life becomes a parable of solitude and anguish, eventually found an admiring audience in America and especially in Europe. The New York Times called Stoner “a perfect novel,” and a host of writers and critics, including Colum McCann, Julian Barnes, Bret Easton Ellis, Ian McEwan, Emma Straub, Ruth Rendell, C.P. Snow, and Irving Howe, praised its artistry. The New Yorker deemed it “a masterly portrait of a truly virtuous and dedicated man.” This biography traces the life of Stoner’s author, John Williams. Charles J. Shields follows the whole arc of Williams’s life, which in many ways paralleled that of his titular character, from their shared working-class backgrounds to their undistinguished careers in academia. Shields vividly recounts Williams’s development as an author, whose other works include the novels Butcher’s Crossing and Augustus (for the latter, Williams shared the 1972 National Book Award). Shields also reveals the astonishing afterlife of Stoner, which garnered new fans with each American reissue, and then became a bestseller all over Europe after a Dutch publisher brought out a translation in 2013. Since then, Stoner has been published in twenty-one countries and sold over a million copies.   “Like Williams, Shields know how to tell a good story, one that will appeal especially to those interested in the ins and outs of the publishing industry and the ups and downs of a writer’s life.” —Los Angeles Review of Books

In a time very different from our own, there lived a woman who led an extraordinary life. The single most important event in her existence has stood the test of time. Her character, her actions, and her deepest thoughts and desires are still debated to this day. She has become a symbol of an era that many people today do not understand or comprehend.

Hannah Duston lived in a period when women were meant to be delicate, feeble, and more compassionate, but she defied this stereotype. She could be thought of as the ultimate mama bear defending her cubs and warding off all who would harm them. Or she could be seen as the wolf among the lambs that waits for the perfect moment to strike. Her accomplishments in life were great, and her courage was stronger than most people. Yet her moral outlook on life was questionable. She was more than just a woman; she was a fighter with a keen sense of survival. She killed to avenge who she loved and never apologized for her actions, even if they were wrong.

The former CBS foreign correspondent provides an invaluable look back at his life—and the events that forged the twentieth century.   A renowned journalist and author of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, William L. Shirer chronicles his own life story—in a personal history that parallels the greater historical events for which he served as a witness. In the first of a three-volume series, Shirer tells of his early life, growing up in Cedar Rapids, and later serving as a new reporter in Paris. In this surprisingly intimate account, Shirer details his youthful challenges, setbacks, rebellions, and insights into the world around him. He offers personal accounts of his friendships with notable people including Isadora Duncan, Ernest Hemingway, and Sinclair Lewis.   This fascinating personal account also provides an illuminating look into a lost pre-World War II era—and is notable as much for its historical value as for its autobiographical detail. Ideal for anyone fascinated by this period in history.

WHAT DIFFERENCE CAN A DOG MAKE?
I was about to find out. For two decades, my life was a cesspool of codependency. Fear consumed me. Life wasn’t worth living. I’d “rescued” the two addicts in my life—one an alcoholic, another a crack addict. Then a puppy I’d foolishly gifted to my crack addict became “my” puppy when I learned it was destined to be traded for crack. I wholeheartedly resented the puppy because the damned thing was always happy, and I was always sad. As a way out of my spiraling life, I attempted suicide one night. I awakened in the morning to kids knocking on my camper door, wanting to play with the puppy. Fifteen minutes later, the puppy screamed in pain. I just knew he’d been hit by a car, likely dying, because everything in life was bad. I opened the camper door, expecting the worst, but the puppy had simply run into a parked car and hurt his paw. The puppy was crying, the kids were crying, and then I too began to cry … uncontrollably.
Suddenly, the puppy and I were one, both in pain. An epiphany…a Helen Keller-like breakthrough that changed my life forever. I suddenly realized he’d tried to bring healthy people into my life, breaking the chains of codependency. I slept with that puppy in my arms for three days. Upon awakening, I looked deeply into his eyes, and promised him I’d share him with the world.
That puppy, my Booster, saved my life … twice! In My Booster, international service dog advocate and author Davis Hawn lays bare his life in the incredible story of Booster. Engaging, enlightening, hilariously funny and heartbreaking at the same time, their story shows the true power of the canine-human bond.
