Summary

When Daniel Gordis, his wife, Elisheva, and their three young children abandoned a safe and comfortable home in Los Angeles to move halfway around the world and find a new life in Israel, the future looked bright. It was 1998, Ehud Barak had just been elected prime minister, and peace appeared to be only a few tough negotiations away. Two years later, hope had turned to terror, as the rattle of machine-gun fire perforated the night and the frightened, exhausted children clung desperately to their stuffed animals in fitful sleep, dreaming perhaps of the quiet, peaceful world they had left behind. In Coming Together, Coming Apart, Gordis tells a timely, relevant, and deeply personal tale that lays bare the complex problems of the seemingly intractable and often incomprehensible Israeli-Palestinian conflict, revealing how much is at stake and underscoring the toll the struggle takes on every human being it touches.

Discover the highest passage tomb in Ireland. Walk along an old smuggler's route, tranquil reservoirs and the sand-dunes of Murlough Nature Reserve. Studying Berlin is like reading a dictionary: while all that you need is a single definition, once you’ve opened the volume, hours or days later you might still find yourself happily hopping from one entry to another.
In fact, to anyone prepared to ask questions and look closer, Berlin soon grows to feel like a whole dictionary section at the state library.
No wonder then it proved to be an impossible task to fit all the historical facts and anecdotes gathered over several years of writing my Kreuzberged blog into just one volume.
So for all those who enjoyed the first book, Notmsparker’s Berlin Companion or I didn’t know that about Berlin, and those who never tire of discovering and learning new, lesser-known facts from this city’s past, here is another installment of curious stories and forgotten tales straight from the treasure trove of your Berlin Companion.

The story behind the eighteenth-century French Creole cottage now on the National Register of Historic Places, with illustrations included.   Magnolia Mound, situated on a ridge overlooking the meandering Mississippi River, stands as Baton Rouge’s most notable eighteenth-century structure. This volume, researched and written under the direction of the Magnolia Mound Board of Trustees, traces the origin and development of this splendid Creole raised cottage, providing an intimate look at plantation life and the economic system that supported it.   Beginning with the original land grant of 1786, the authors document both the social and the architectural history of the celebrated structure—from its origin as a modest settler’s house and farm to its later grandeur as a distinctive home situated within an extensive working plantation. The book also includes an account of the successful struggle by the Foundation for Historical Louisiana—which keeps the building and grounds open to the public—to save the house from destruction in 1960.Winner, Certificate of Commendation from the American Association for State and Local History

Take the Exorcist Steps to meet “the diverse array of ghosts” in DC’s historic neighborhood—from the author of Capitol Hill Haunts (The Hoya).   On the banks of the Potomac River, Georgetown has had three centuries to accumulate ghoulish tales and venerable apparitions to haunt its cobbled streets and mansions. In this historic Washington, DC, neighborhood, the eerie moans of three sisters herald every death on the river, and on R Street, President Lincoln is rumored to have witnessed the paranormal at a seance. Along the towpath of the C&O Canal, a phantom police officer still walks his lonely beat, and on moonlit nights, he is joined by a razor-wielding ghoul. From the spirit of a sea captain who lingers in the Old Stone House to the strange ambiance of the Exorcist Steps, author and guide Tim Krepp takes readers on a chilling journey through the ghostly lore of Georgetown.   Includes photos!   “A great storyteller who, with a confident grasp of the facts and judiciously inserted asides, can bring to life both the haunters and the haunted. His way of ending his chapters with—gasp!—the literary equivalent of a horror movie organ chord lends a delightfully chilling touch.” —HillRag
