Synopsis

Winner of the 2015 International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) Cookbook AwardForewords by Alice Waters and Michael PollanIn this dazzling, full color cookbook and kitchen manual filled with lush photographs and beautiful drawings, the chef of Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse offers basic techniques and essential recipes that will transform anyone into a confident home cook. When his oldest son was leaving for college, Cal Peternell, the chef of San Francisco’s legendary Chez Panisse, realized that, although he regularly made dinners for his family, he’d never taught them the basics of cooking. Based on the life-altering course of instruction he prepared and honed through many phone calls with his son, Twelve Recipes is the ultimate introduction to the kitchen. Peternell focuses on the core foods and dishes that comprise a successful home cook’s arsenal, each building skill upon skill—from toast, eggs, and beans, to vinaigrettes, pasta with tomato, and rice, to vegetables, soup, meats, and cake.Twelve Recipes will help home cooks develop a core repertoire of skills and increase their culinary confidence. Peternell tells you what basic ingredients and tools you need for a particular recipe, and then adds variations to expand your understanding. Each tip, instruction, and recipe connects with others to weave into a larger story that illuminates the connection between food and life. A deeply personal book, it was written by the chef alone and it glows with warmth and humor as he mulls over such mundane items as toast and rice to offer surprising new insights about foods that only seem exceedingly ordinary. It’s a book you’re as likely to keep by your bedside as your stovetop. With Peternell as your guide, the journey is pure pleasure and the destination is delicious.Twelve Recipes features gorgeous color photos and inset illustrations by Peternell’s wife and sons (all artists), and forewords by celebrated chef Alice Waters and New York Times columnist and bestselling author Michael Pollan.

Today still considered a “Bad Boy”, Pascin was a brilliant artist who lived and worked in the shadow of contemporaries such as Picasso, Modigliani, and several others. A specialist of the feminine form, his canvasses are as tormented as his party lifestyle. The artist, considered scandalous for the erotic character of his works, exhibited in numerous Salons, notably in Berlin, Paris, and New York.

In this informative and fully illustrated guide, Bob H. Batty—a noted collector of pressed glass—covers more than three hundred glass patterns. Two hundred of which are identified and illustrated for the first time for the first time. Artist John Hendricks’ drawings depict the design and character of the various patterns and in many cases highlight special design and detail of notable patterns. All of the works shown are from Batty’s personal collection, which numbers more than 2,700 pieces representing some 1,900 patterns. Batty, who has pursued his glass collecting with scholarly attention to historical accuracy and detail, has named many of the previously uncatalogued patterns after cities and landmarks throughout his native South. A number of foreign patterns are also included, with precise measurements given for every piece depicted.

"Jesse....get over here!" I must have said that a gazillion times... as she trotted away. Why? Because I made a crucial mistake when I trained her. She became a character who provided many funny stories, so that even my friends with dogs would tell Jesse stories! Written in 2001, this is a story about best friends. I thought she was a dog. She thought I was her entertainment director. "The dog on the verge of words" is what one friend always said. We lived together for almost 14 years in a few states and we traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. Jesse even rode on a ferry from Alaska to British Columbia. She watched the world go by with a smile for everyone she met. My family and our friends, both human and canine, looked forward to our visits and see what Jess would be up to this time!
The story about Jesse's life is intertwined with the story of how this book came to be. That story, written while I lived in a small village in Ireland, is full of fate and luck and was a romance novel in the making: but this was real life.
Most of the popular dogs whom we know were introduced to us by men and I for one am grateful for all the wonderful dogs I have met through their stories. Thanks guys!
Me 'n Jess exemplifies the fact that dogs can be "Woman's Best Friend" too. Enjoy the fun!
