This includes who she will marry, her work, and even what she can read or listen to. The Society prioritizes order and efficiency and has eliminated most forms of art and free expression. However, Cassia begins to question the system when she experiences anomalies in the Matching process. Her grandfather’s death and his gift of forbidden poetry further fuel her desire for something more. She also forms a forbidden relationship with Ky, an Aberration, that sparks rebellion and a desire to understand and experience life beyond the confines of the Society. The novel explores themes of control, choice, and rebellion, as Cassia seeks personal freedom and a genuine connection in a world that values stability over individuality.
