  The potential of films to educate has been crucial for the development of cinema intended to influence culture, and is as important as conceptions of film as a form of art, science, industry, or entertainment. Using the concept of institutionalization as a heuristic for generating new approaches to the history of educational cinema, contributors to this volume study the co-evolving discourses, cultural practices, technical standards, and institutional frameworks that transformed educational cinema from a convincing idea into an enduring genre.  
   
  The Institutionalization of Educational Cinema examines the methods of production, distribution, and exhibition established for the use of educational films within institutions—such as schools, libraries, and industrial settings—in various national and international contexts and takes a close look at the networks of organizations, individuals, and government agencies that were created as a result of these films’ circulation. Through case studies of educational cinemas in different North American and European countries that explore various modes of institutionalization of educational film, this book highlights the wide range of vested interests that framed the birth of educational and nontheatrical cinema.

  The Time of Joseph Haydn: From Sultan Mahmud I to Sultan Mahmud II (r.1730-1839), the second volume of Ottoman Empire and European Theatre, explores the relationship between Western playwrights, composers and visual artists of the eighteenth-century and Turkish-Ottoman culture, as well as the interest of Ottoman artists in European culture. Twenty-seven contributions by renowned experts shed light on the mutual influences that affected society and art for both Europeans and Ottomans. Successor to the first volume of the series, The Age of Mozart and Sultan Selim III (1756-1808), this book examines the compositions of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) and his contemporaries along with events in the Ottoman political era during the time span from Sultan Mahmud I (b.1696, r.1730-1754) to Sultan Mahmud II (b.1785, r.1808-1839). Taking Haydn's Türkenopern ('Turkish operas') Lo speziale (1768) and L'incontro improvviso (1775) as the departure point, the articles collected in this publication reflect the growth of research in the area of cultural transfers between the Ottoman Empire and non-Ottoman Europe, as expressed in theatre, music and the visual arts.

  In 1962 Seán Ó Sé recorded 'An Poc ar Buile' with Seán Ó Riada and Ceoltóirí Chualann. It proved a huge success and resulted in seven wonderful years working with Ó Riada and over sixty years of singing. Born in 1936, Seán grew up in west Cork not far from where his parents taught at Coomhola Boys' School near Bantry. Following in his parents' footsteps, Seán trained as a teacher and became Principal in Knocknaheeny on Cork city's north side, remaining there until his retirement in 1993. Also recounted is Seán meeting his beloved Eileen, their family life and his struggle with cancer. Throughout it all, he sang. His singing career had taken off in 1959 when he won the traditional singing competition in Feis na Mumhan. It brought him to faraway places he could never have imagined growing up near Ballylickey in west Cork. * Also available: Seán Ó Riada by Tomás Ó Cannain
