Summary

Four simple laws of project management: “Everyone who must depend upon others to deliver results by a deadline should read this book.” —Donald M. Dible, co-founder, ProjectWorld   Everyone is a project manager—projects are what all of us do, day in and day out. Skillful project management is fundamental to survival in today’s warp-speed world. Yet it is often misunderstood, leading to unrealistic deadlines, poorly defined goals, and wasted time.    The secret to successful project management, says Barry Flicker, is making and keeping clear commitments—far easier said than done in a time of complex, cross-departmental projects and sometimes unclear lines of authority. Through a story about people confronting daily frustrations on the job, Flicker demonstrates how shifting focus from blaming “the idiots out there” to examining one’s own behaviors and assumptions helps people to overcome obstacles. Working at Warp Speed shows how following four simple laws can transform workers’ most frustrating complaints from persistent barriers into potential breakthrough experiences.

As product managers, we all want to become better at what we do. However, sometimes we can find ourselves in a rut: we've solved the immediate problems, our product is doing well, and we've just lost that drive that we need in order to reach the next level.

This is when the power of competition comes in. We all like a good challenge. When we are faced with a situation in which we might not be the best, or we might not know exactly what we should do, that's when we can become our best.

    What You'll Find Inside:

TO BEAT THE COMPETITION, PRODUCT MANAGERS HAVE TO DO SOME HOMEWORK
HOW YAHOO PRODUCT MANAGERS ARE KICKING GOOGLE’S BUTT
CASE STUDY: WHAT TO DO WHEN A LARGE COMPETITOR SHOWS UP ON YOUR BLOCK
HOW PRODUCT MANAGERS SHOULD GO ABOUT DOING BUSINESS RESEARCH

Competitive situations for product managers can take on a number of different forms. They can be as simple as placing ourselves into a setting in which we are called on to network with others. Maybe it's as simple as challenging us to pay closer attention to what's going on – easy to say, hard to do.

Mastering competition requires us to become experts at a lot of different skills. These include managing other people, finding mentors, and continuing our education. Throw in things like learning to stop multitasking and how to create an effective resume and all of a sudden you have some fairly challenging tasks ahead of you.

The good news is that every product manager can rise to meet these challenges. No matter if it's learning how to find your next product manager job or how to deal with a situation in which you've been passed over for a promised promotion, your ability to deal with the competition that comes along with your product manager job will be the key to your long term success.

“Concentrating on personal finance don’ts is a clever idea . . . an intriguing reminder of what not to do when investing your money.” —The New York Times   Brilliant investors and top businesspeople make mistakes, too—very expensive ones. Drawing on his twenty-plus years of experience at some of Wall Street’s most prestigious firms, as well as original research and interviews with these legendary investors, Stephen Weiss offers fascinating narrative accounts of their billion-dollar blunders.   Here, such prominent figures as Kirk Kerkorian, Bill Ackman, David Bonderman, Aubrey McClendon, and Leon Cooperman discuss the most significant trade or investment that went against them, the magnitude of the loss, its effect on their businesses—and on their personal lives. The book skillfully examines the causal relationship between the quirks of each investor’s personality and the mistakes they have committed—as well as the lessons learned. While some investors made errors of judgment, others made errors of perception. But no matter how many zeros were attached to these particular losses, investors at any level can profit from the wisdom gained—and avoid the same missteps.   “When a great investor flubs it, everyone can learn a lesson. With that in mind, author Stephen Weiss delves into the biggest mistakes of such Wall Street luminaries as Bill Ackman, Leon Cooperman and Richard Pzena.” —Barron’s

We’re so often faced with apparent paradoxes: continuity and change, conservatism and progressiveness, predictability and chaos. In business, inherent tensions are mistakenly viewed as problems to be resolved once the “correct” answer is found. But when we consider only one direction—either A or B—we only see part of the picture. The strongest and most innovative solutions are frequently realized not through either/or decisionmaking, but by pursuing two contrasting options at the same time.Taking readers through the same steps she’s used to help Fortune 500 companies such as Scottrade, Georgia-Pacific, and Boeing, Deborah Schroeder-Saulnier reveals a dynamic critical-thinking process anyone can use to define the strategic tensions within his or her organization, identify the potential of seemingly conflicting options, and develop action steps to maximize the benefits of each.Complete with examples of companies that achieved a competitive advantage with this breakthrough strategy, The Power of Paradox will help you face chronic challenges with confidence and uncover unexpected and infinitely better solutions.
