Summary

The beautiful eighteen year old Karla Stanton, who is living in the country with her brother training horses, is astonished when her half-sister Penelope, now Lady Melford, who is renowned as a great beauty in London, unexpectedly calls on her.
She wishes Karla to disguise herself as her aged aunt and chaperone and to go with her to Paris where she intends to spend three days, ostensibly shopping for clothes, but actually to be with the Marquis of Welbourne, who she is having a passionate affaire-de- coeur with.
Karla who has never been out of England and who knows nothing of the Social world and its ways is astounded at the request and frightened that she would be unmasked.
However, she obeys her sister when she produces a wig, dark spectacles and theatrical make-up to hide her face and make look much older.
Karla is thrilled with the beauty and glamour of Paris where everything is new and intriguing to her.
But the Marquis has a rival in the Duc de Alezia, who does his best to monopolise Penelope.
How the first women’s horse race takes place privately on the famous Racecourse at Longchamps.
And how Karla saves her sister’s face and the Duc’s bet on his Arab stallion at the last moment and finally finds love is told in this unusual and fast-moving story by BARBARA CARTLAND.

In the Black Forest Spa town of Baden-Baden for the money to be made at the gaming tables, professional gambler and Englishman Quintus Tiverton is disturbed to hear the sound of an English girl being whipped savagely in an attic room of a country inn.

‘It is none of my business,’ he tells himself, but the sound of the girl’s weeping is inescapable and he has to go and investigate.

Instantly he is captivated by Selina Wade, the blue-eyed waif he encounters and, finding that she is being exploited cruelly by a ‘domestic agency’ proprietor who is little better than a ‘madam’, resolves to save her.

Quintus Tiverton smuggles her out of the inn in the early morning and he then spends a great deal of money, which he does not have, in buying her new fashionable dresses to make even more beautiful.

And so naïve Selina finds herself posing as the gambler’s pretty sister, as Quintus Tiverton tries to marry her off to someone suitably rich amongst the international wealthy who frequent Baden-Baden in the Season .

Little does Quintus know that poor Selina’s heart is already taken.  And she only has eyes for him!

Still less does he realise that he too is falling in love.

Lady Georgina Lang returns to The Castle from her father’s funeral to wonder what the future holds for her.
Because her father had always longed for a son to succeed him, he had brought her up and educated her exactly as if she was a boy. She dressed as a boy and, although she had been christened Georgina, he liked calling her George.
She was completely alone in the huge castle, which was now inherited by the new Earl of Langfield, a distant cousin who had been difficult to trace.
Alister, however, had never, in his wildest dreams, expected to become the eleventh Earl of Langfield.
He had left England in a fury because, having been pressed into marrying a very suitable young woman chosen by his family, he had run away to be free of her. When she died, he had sworn that he would never marry again as he disliked all women especially those who argued and were determined to have their own way.
He finds his cousin Georgina at The Castle and she shows him the vast estate, the farms, the villages and The Castle itself, all of which now belongs to him.
He also learns that, as he is the Head of the Family, traditionally they rely on him entirely for financial support.
Georgina has already been warned by her aunt that on no account is she to wear men’s clothes in front of Alister and always to be soft, sweet and gentle in his company. And she has to persuade him as a weak woman to realise his position as the Earl of Langfield.
How a newspaper article describing The Castle and its valuable contents brings a tiresome neighbour to the Castle.
How the Earl, because she is un-chaperoned makes Georgina go to the Dower House.
How the article attracts some ferocious burglars to The Castle.
How Georgina saves the Earl’s life and unexpectedly finds love and happiness is all told is this unusual story by BARBARA CARTLAND.
