Summary

The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope is a satirical novel by Anthony Trollope, published in London in 1875 after first appearing in serialised form. It is one of the last significant Victorian novels to have been published in monthly parts.

The novel is Trollope's longest, comprising 100 chapters, and is particularly rich in sub-plot. It was inspired by the financial scandals of the early 1870s; Trollope had just returned to England from abroad, and was appalled by the greed and dishonesty those scandals exposed. This novel was his rebuke. It dramatised how such greed and dishonesty pervaded the commercial, political, moral, and intellectual life of that era.

Trollope began writing The Way We Live Now on May 1, 1873, five months after returning from an extended trip to Australia and New Zealand. He paused work in order to write the shorter novel Harry Heathcote of Gangoil, a Christmas novel he had already promised his publisher, but he resumed work on The Way We Live Now by July. It was completed on 22 December 1873, and the first of twenty monthly installments was published by Chapman & Hall beginning in February 1874.

Chapman & Hall had purchased the rights for both the serialisation and the full novel for £3,000. However, the serialisation sold badly, prompting the publisher to release the full novel in a two volume form in June 1875, four months before the serialisation was set to finish. The two volume first editions were large octavos occupied by the unsold pages from the serialised printings.

As election season swirls with fear-based platforms, this book offers a fresh approach to understanding one's personal perceptions of fear and the reactions they cause. Each topic is presented with an Interview, the Good news and the Not-So-Good News, a Mindfulness Practice, and an Affirmation.
We’ve all heard the warning at some point in life: “Go ahead. What’s to fear?” Little did we know just how big those words would impact our lives. They were meant to encourage and empower, but over time became engrained in our minds causing doubt and making us wonder, what else is there to fear? This has left some stuck with the same self-destructive fears they’ve had since childhood; fears that now hold them back from success, happiness, peace of mind, and even . . . love.
Fear is a natural survival skill that cannot be eliminated from our psyche—nor should it be because it’s a part of our inner fabric. So then, how do we grow and achieve the greatness life has to offer if our inherent fears keep trying to undermine us, to slow us down and divert us? We live in a world of mass media coverage and social networks that view the world with divisive intentions and opposing beliefs all in an effort to stir fear and build support. Instead of surrendering to our fears and obeying them, perhaps it’s time to listen and learn.Dennis Merritt Jones, DD has been practicing and teaching New Thought principles for over 40 years. These lessons serve to help people understand how their true inner nature can thrive and prosper in the real world where others tend to make it difficult to succeed. In this timely new book, When Fear Speaks, Listen, Dr. Dennis has identified the dominant “7 Messengers of Fear” that are alive and active within us: ANGER, WORRY, JUDGEMENT, SELFISHNESS, SHAME, LONELINESS, AND UNCERTAINTY

In the years leading up to the Swedish Famine of 1867–1869, the Kingdom of Sweden stood at a crossroads between tradition and transformation. The mid-19th century was a period of great change, with emerging industrialization in urban areas clashing with the deep-rooted agrarian lifestyle that still defined the countryside. A vast majority of Swedes lived in rural regions, relying heavily on subsistence farming and small-scale agriculture. This dependence on crop yields, particularly barley, rye, and potatoes, made the rural population extremely vulnerable to climatic changes and poor harvests.
Despite some gradual modernization efforts, Sweden’s agricultural systems remained underdeveloped and highly sensitive to weather conditions. Farming techniques were largely traditional, and the infrastructure for food storage and distribution was limited. There was little to cushion communities in the event of failed crops. In a nation where most people lived off what they could grow or trade locally, a single bad season could spell hardship. Several parts of the country had endured minor food shortages in prior decades, but none on the scale that would soon descend upon the nation.
Adding to this vulnerability were the unusual weather patterns beginning to emerge in the mid-1860s. Winters grew colder and longer, and summers were often too short or too wet for successful harvesting. These anomalies were not yet fully understood at the time, and meteorological science was in its infancy. Farmers, used to working in rhythm with the natural seasons, found themselves unprepared for the climatic disruptions that lay ahead. The winter of 1867 would prove to be particularly devastating, marking the beginning of a three-year catastrophe.
