Synopsis

PREFACE

When we first announced our intention of publishing
a translation of this work, we were unaware that it had ever appeared in
English before it was inserted in the New York Truthseeker by “Scholasticus.”
This able and learned writer, who has since published his translation, with
other highly interesting matter, under the title of “Revelations of Antichrist
concerning Christ and Christianity,” (Boston: J. P. Mendum.—New York: D. M.
Bennett; 1879) supposed that he was the first who introduced it to the
English-speaking world. He was, however, mistaken. We have quite recently
lighted on a translation published by Richard Carlile in 1823. It was done by a
Jew, who stated that it had “never before been wholly translated into any modern language.” He appears to
have been right in this statement, as the earliest continental translation we
can trace is in German, and was published at Stuttgart in 1850, in a volume
together with the Apocryphal Gospels, by Dr. R. Clemons. No copy of the Richard
Carlile edition (the Hebrew translator does not give his name) is to be found
in the British Museum. It is a sixteen-page octavo pamphlet, with an Editor’s
Preface, probably by Carlile himself, and a Dedication by the translator “To
the Clergy of the Church of England.” His English text is substantially the
same as that now published. Some of its phrases are rough and
racy, possibly owing to his strict adherence to the original; and instead of
veiling in Latin the amours of Pandera and Miriam, he relates them in plain
English, with Biblical naïvité.

The Sepher Toldoth Jeshu was
first published in Latin, with the Hebrew text in parallel columns, by J. C.
Wagenseil in his “Tela Ignea Satanae,” a collection of Jewish Anti-Christian
tracts, all translated into Latin, with attempted refutations. To collect these
valuable tracts, Wagenseil travelled widely through Spain and into Africa,
where the chief centres of Jewish learning then existed. His work was published
at Altdorf in 1681.

From a New York Times–bestselling author: Three epic historical novels that bring to life the spirit of the Jewish immigrant experience in America.  New York Times–bestselling author Cynthia Freeman is beloved for her multigenerational sagas of Jewish immigrant families in America, including her sensational debut, A World Full of Strangers, which sold more than a million copies. The three novels collected here center on ordinary, heroic women who journey across the ocean in search of opportunity, finding both community and adversity, family togetherness and private grief, tragedy and triumph.  A World Full of Strangers: In 1932, Polish immigrant Katie Kovitz is embraced by the Jewish community of the Lower East Side. But after marrying a man who rejects his heritage, she struggles to reclaim her lost identity in this sensational debut novel.  Portraits: In this New York Times bestseller, Esther Sandsonitsky leaves her abusive husband and journeys to the United States in order to capture a piece of the American dream for her children—including Jacob, the son she was forced to leave behind.  No Time for Tears: “This impassioned novel follows its heroine, Chavala Landau, from turn-of-the-century Russia to Palestine and on to the United States, where she carves out a financial empire in the diamond industry before returning to Jerusalem in 1948” (The New York Times).

How to Be Certain That Your Understanding of God Reflects the Truth of Scripture
If we want to know the truth about God, we need a sound approach to incorporating what the whole Bible teaches. In this concise introduction to systematic theology, theologian Graham A. Cole explores how we move from Scripture to doctrine in order to shape what we believe, what we value, and how we live. He shows us the importance of having the right method: rooted in the word of God, consistent with church history, in the context of a broken world, dependent on divine wisdom, and ultimately aiming at pure worship.
The first volume in the Short Studies in Systematic Theology series, this book explores what it means to do theology, why theology matters, and what it looks like to derive doctrine from God's word—helping us understand what to believe, what to value, and how to live. Each chapter looks at 1 of 5 crucial components for constructing good theology: revelation from God, tradition from the past, worship, wisdom, and experience of brokenness, with case studies illustrating how doctrine is developed from each of these important sources. Readers will be left with a deeper understanding of how to make sure their theology faithfully reflects the truth of God's word.

    - 5 Crucial Elements of Constructing Good Theology: Explores revelation from God, tradition from the past, worship, wisdom, and experience of brokenness
    - Practical: Explains how to move from Scripture to doctrine
    - Accessible: Uses case studies to demonstrate the importance and elements of good theology
