Synopsis

Anita Loos'Äôs "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" is a groundbreaking comedic novel that captures the escapades of Lorelei Lee, a charming and shrewd gold digger navigating the social hierarchies of early 20th-century America. Written in a playful and conversational prose, Loos employs a diary format that unveils the candid thoughts of her protagonist, revealing the dynamics of gender and wealth in a rapidly changing society. The novel not only delights with its wit but also critiques the superficiality of wealth and romantic relationships, making it an essential text within the canon of early feminist literature. Loos, an accomplished screenwriter and playwright, drew from her experiences in the entertainment industry and her astute observations of societal norms to craft this iconic narrative. Her time in the bustling world of Hollywood and her upbringing in a creative family provided her with unique insights into the roles and expectations placed upon women, particularly those who sought financial independence through their charm and allure. This personal background highly informed Lorelei'Äôs character, resonating with readers and challenging traditional notions of femininity. This novel is a must-read for anyone interested in the interplay of humor, feminism, and social commentary in literature. Loos's incisive wit and cultural critique invite readers to reevaluate societal mores, making "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" not just a delightful romp but also a thoughtful exploration of the complexities of desire, ambition, and identity.

During the years of 1995-2008 I fought the law (Secondary School Administrators) and the law won. I taught with my heart and not my head. I gave my all but did not know this was not allowed. I was nominated Teacher of the Year Twice. Yet lost it because I was teaching out of my area. I left twice in the middle of the year, well three times because the Law was not doing its job. This is a book I feel every new teacher or even a veteran should read. It is a tale all, no holds barred, except changing the names, locations to protect from any law suits. At first I labeled this “Teaching Black While White” because many districts I worked in were minority based or “At Risk.” Now I must warn my readers; this is a male Caucasian teacher not realizing this game is ruled by the opposite sex. Though most of my enemies were male Principals. I will be able to give you some subtle guides as to what to do and what not to do at any school. This book is dedicated to students every where who are stereo typed as low achievers. Also to teachers or educators who are thinking of giving up; don't give them the satisfaction. Stay in the game! A writer finds wealth, fame, and sorrow in midcentury Manhattan in “a tremendous novel . . . full of wisdom and pain” by the #1 New York Times–bestselling author (Los Angeles Times). Arthur Youngblood Hawke, an ex-Navy man, moves from hardscrabble rural Kentucky to New York, hoping to make his mark on the literary world. His first novel becomes an instant hit, and he is toasted by critics and swept along on a tide of celebrity. But as Hawke gives himself over to the lush life that gilds artistic success—indulging in an affair with an older married woman and a flirtation with his editor, dabbling in real estate developments as his second novel brings him massive wealth and even bigger opportunities—he soon finds himself in a self-destructive downward spiral. Inspired by the life of Thomas Wolfe, and spanning from the Manhattan publishing world to Hollywood to Europe, Youngblood Hawke is both a riveting saga of postwar glamor and a poignant tale of one man’s rise and fall. “A big, powerful, exciting novel . . . Wouk has a tremendous narrative gift.” —San Francisco Chronicle “As searing and accurate a picture of New York in the late 1940s and 1950s as Bonfire of the Vanities was of its period. . . . And icing the cake are some marvelous Hollywood sections, including the best agent-in-action-on-two-telephones scenes ever captured in print.” —Los Angeles Times

François-Anatole Thibault was born on the 16th April 1844 in Paris, France, the son of a bookseller and bibliophile.

He studied at the Collège Stanislas, a private Catholic school, and after graduating joined his father in the bookstore, which specialised in works on the French Revolution. Several years later he secured a position as cataloguer at Bacheline-Deflorenne and at Lemerre before being appointed librarian for the French Senate in 1876.

His literary career had begun as a journalist and as a poet before publishing his novel ‘Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard’ in 1881. Praised for its elegant prose, it won him a prestigious prize from the Académie Française, which later elected him to its storied ranks.

His works were profound and thoughtful and often couched in surreal and outlandish expressions; whether penguins baptized by a near-blind Abbott transformed themselves into humans or of a guardian angel who becomes an atheist, his stories turned established thought into startling literature.

His short stories run in the same vein. The premise may seem plausible but his distinctive style turns them into an individual viewpoint which invokes both discussion and admiration.

In his private life his relationships with women were often turbulent. A Socialist, he was a fervent supporter of the Russian Revolution and the early years of the French Communist party.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921 but the following year his entire canon of works was placed on the prohibited list of the Catholic Church, which he thought of as a credit to his name.

Anatole France died on the 12th October 1924 in Tours. He was 80.
