Bestselling and award-winning mystery writers set the hounds on the killers’ trail—in an incomparable quartet of crime stories with a canine edge.

New York Times–bestselling author J.A. Jance provides a spellbinding saga of a scam-busting septuagenarian and her two golden retrievers. Anthony Award-winner and Agatha and Edgar Award finalist Virginia Lanier’s thrilling tale features bloodhounds and bloody murder. Edgar and Anthony nominee Chassie West’s suspenseful stunner is about a life-saving German shepherd and a ghastly forgotten crime. And Lee Charles Kelley, author of the series starring criminologist-turned-dog trainer Jack Field, offers an edge-of-your-seat yarn that pits an ex-cop kennel owner and a yappy toy poodle against a craven killer.

"With Robin Monarch, Mark Sullivan has created a Jason Bourne for the new millennium" —James RollinsMark Sullivan, the co-author of James Patterson's Private Games, has, in Robin Monarch, created a compelling new hero. Monarch is a world-class thief and a highly skilled operative – a man with skills, a rigid code of honor, powerful friends and implacable enemies. In ‘The Art of Rendition,' Monarch is an agent for the CIA, called upon to use his unique skills to kidnap and interrogate a Russian nuclear scientist suspected of selling technology to the Iranians. But that's only part of the challenge – one that many trained agents could handle effectively. They've called upon Monarch because, after the interrogation, he must return the scientist without the Russians, the Iranians, or the scientist himself ever knowing he's been grabbed. Meet Robin Monarch in "The Art of Rendition," a thrilling, compelling story which showcases the author and character, each at the top of their form. As a bonus, included is a special excerpt from Rogue, the first Robin Monarch novel, coming in Fall of 2012.

These are three stories that will delight your heart and soul. The little girl Ruth in the first story is very privileged young lady with everything she could wish for except,of course, for companionship. Her mother has passed away and her father is a very busy lawyer who barely notices she is there. But then Ruth finds a scruffy, skinny and mostly ugly cat; the cat who lives in the kitchen and cellars, hence The Kitchen Cat. Her attempts to befriend this stray despite insurmountable obstsacles make this story a really heart warming tale. She does eventually find the best kind of companionship but I won't tell you with who or when. Sarah's Sunday Out is the tale of a pampered little dog who wants to see the world and finally The Toad in the Hole is the tale of a somewhat selfish little girl and her lesson in seeing things from anothers' point of view. All are bitter sweet and all are delightful. You will be glad you listened to them. I know I'm glad I read them.

"I am convinced, " says Jake Silkstone, the hypochondriac narrator of Clive Sinclair's still provocative novel, "that if Rabbi Nathan hadn't tried to rape Helga, our German au pair, during the course of my barmitzvah celebrations at the Café Royal on the evening of 21 May 1961, things would have turned out very differently...." In the event, "things", as far as Jake is concerned, have been turning out differently since long before the night of Rabbi Nathan's folly. Sharing a birthday with a the modern State of Israel, son of the man whose deep-penetration passes on the football field are rumoured to have inspired the guerrilla warfare tactics of Orde Wingate, chief fan and chronicler of the all-Jewish Wingate Football Club, adolescent blackmailer of the desirable Helga, and latterly literary editor of the Jewish Voice -Jake Silkstone's life has been marked by the finger of destiny, if not by the finger of the Lord. As things progress from worse to terrible in a world only slightly madder than our own, Jake Silkstone becomes the unwitting cause of the Israeli invasion of the Lebanon and finally victim of a blood libel -the accusation of ritual murder, England's special contribution to antisemitism. Clive Sinclair's dazzling, funny and ultimately serious novel reaches a climax that launches the reader into vertiginous orbit spinning between the twin suns of fiction and reality. "In Blood Libels, Clive Sinclair has assembled the Jewish anomaly: at odds with the Old Judaism, ambivalent towards the new Zionism. The old and new mythologies about Jewishness produce an irreconcilable conflict: within Jacob Silkstone, in the State of Israel and throughout the world. More funny than sad, more ironic than tragic, the novel presents the story, rather than the history, of statelessness." TLS "The blurred sense of where reality begins and fantasy stops (or vice versa) gives Blood Libels an immediacy and an edge that stimulates the reader's imagination... The novel cracks with fast, funny, farcical incidents, accidents, coincidences, and inconsequential events which nevertheless, hang together monstrously to change the world." The Scotsman

What happens when science tampers with nature? A riveting, cautionary tale with disastrous results reveals the chilling answer.Hoping to create a new growth agent for food with beneficial uses to mankind, two scientists find that the spread of the material is uncontrollable. Giant chickens, rats, and insects run amok, and children given the food stuffs experience incredible growth--and serious illnesses. Over the years, people who have eaten these specially treated foods find themselves unable to fit into a society where ignorance and hypocrisy rule. These "giants," with their extraordinary mental powers, find themselves shut away from an older, more traditional society. Intolerance and hatred increase as the line of distinction between ordinary people and giants is drawn across communities and families. One of H. G. Wells' lesser-known works, The Food of the Gods has been retold many times in many forms since it was first published in 1904. The gripping, newly relevant tale combines fast-paced entertainment with social commentary as it considers the ethics involved in genetic engineering.

The classic short story collection of Southern life by the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Optimist’s Daughter.

These eight stories reveal the singular imaginative power of one of America's most admired writers. Set in the region of the Old Natchez Trace along the lower Mississippi, the stories dip in and out of history and range from virgin wilderness to a bar in New Orleans.

In “First Love,” set in 1807, a deaf and orphaned boot-boy has a remarkable encounter with a man accused of treason, Aaron Burr. “Asphodel” ingeniously recreates a classic legend in the Old South. And the title story captures a moment in time for a pregnant woman and her young husband who has stayed out all night. In each story, Miss Welty sustains the high level of performance that, throughout her distinguished career, has won her numerous literary awards.

"Miss Welty runs a photofinish with the finest prose artists of her time." —Time
