A memoir of a remote Spanish fishing village just after WWII, a community on the brink of change, by “the finest travel writer of the last century” (The New Yorker). Seeking solace in the everyday after his World War II army service, travel writer Norman Lewis returns to his beloved Spain, to the fishing village of Farol, in the hopes of recapturing a lost sense of home. It is a place he knows better than his native England, and he finds the Spanish countryside “still as nostalgically backward-looking as ever, still magnificent, still invested with all its ancient virtues and ancient defects.” He spends three seasons as a fisherman, basking in the simplicity of village customs. Lovingly written and richly evocative, Voices of the Old Sea is an absorbing look at a centuries-old lifestyle in its final days, as the tide of modernization threatens to change it forever.

These stories were told to me by my friends and family. I've had to struggle with my disability for a long time. I want to write this book, I hope you find it interesting. It's from parts of my life that I've treasured. Especially with my relatives that I didn't know because we lived so far away, 550 miles away, from Indiana to Iowa. I loved our family vacations. You will find some stories from the bible. I hope you will see how important that book is to me. I have trouble every day. but I know He's in my life and without Him, I would not live. I know you have times when you've needed help. For a while, I couldn't even pray. I knew better but I had lost hope. I've had such help from the Veterans. I have friends now. And I trust those whom I know will be O.K. Please read the Biblical stories thoughtfully. They are scriptures passed down from six or seven thousand years ago.

A firsthand account of a German soldier’s horrific experiences fighting in France and Belgium, culminating in his escape from military service.   In 1913 Julius Koettgen, a pacifist and a socialist, was drafted into the ranks of sapper battalion No. 30. He dutifully fought in the ranks of the Kaiser’s armies during 1914 and 1915 and saw action in France and Belgium where he describes the terrible events which were to become known as “the rape of Belgium” and also details the extent of the fighting including being forced to form part of a firing squad, crossing the Meuse under heavy fire, using corpses as road building materials, annihilating a cavalry charge, hand-to-hand bayonet fighting, and the awful events of the disastrous German retreat from the Marne.   Koettgen also experienced the horrors of trench warfare and the famous Christmas truce of 1914. In 1915 he decided that enough was enough and escaped military life by deserting the colors and slipping through the lines to neutral Holland. His was memoirs were published by a gleeful allied press under the title A German Deserter’s War Experience.   This English translation—edited and introduced by Emmy Award™-winning historian Bob Carruthers—provides a rare primary source of insight into the German side during the crucial opening battles of the war and is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the Great War from the German perspective.

Few men could compare to Benjamin Franklin. Virtually self-taught, he excelled as an athlete, a man of letters, a printer, a scientist, a wit, an inventor, an editor, and a writer, and he was probably the most successful diplomat in American history. David Hume hailed him as the first great philosopher and great man of letters in the New World.

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is one of the most important and influential works in American history. It tells the story of Franklin's life from his humble beginnings to his emergence as a leading figure in the American colonies. In the process, it creates a portrait of Franklin as the quintessential American. Because of the book, Franklin became a role model for future generations of Americans, who hoped to emulate his rags-to-riches story. The autobiography has also become one of the central works not just for understanding Franklin but for understanding America.

Initially written as a letter to his son William, the autobiography offers Franklin's reflections on philosophy and religion, politics, war, education, material success, and the status of women. Stylistically his best work, it has become a classic in world literature, one to inspire and delight readers everywhere.
